Food and other consumables offer a noticeable boost in stats/performance. For any organized group event, consumables add a noticeable boost in character effectiveness, even if you're not using the top-end food items.

Precision/Ferocity	Bowl of Curry Butternut Squash Soup (ideal) Bowl of Butternut Squash Soup (cheap)	Best food if your class lacks crit chance to cap even with truffle steak.
Lifesteal/Stat	Omnomberry Ghost (Precision) Piece of Allspice Cake (Power)	Best food if you have trouble maintaining a scholar bonus on a class.
% Damage while moving/stat	Bowl of Seaweed Salad (ideal) Bowl of Asparagus and Sage Salad (cheaper)	Best option if you can use your high damage skills while moving (see Revenant auto-attack for an example).

Power/Boon Duration	Bountiful Sharpening Stone	Boon duration utility item, used primarily on quickness stacking (chronomancer), can be used on might stackers.
